RedR Australia is a not‐for‐profit organisation which selects, trains, deploys and supports experts deployed to international humanitarian relief operations. RedR Australia maintains a Standby Register of experienced and highly mobile professionals to assist with humanitarian operations. RedR Australia has recently deployed personnel to support our UN Partner Agencies in Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Jordan, Liberia, Pakistan, Fiji, South Sudan, Kenya, Switzerland, Egypt, Italy, Thailand and Burma.
As part of RedR Australia’s ongoing support to humanitarian operations worldwide, we are seeking experienced Public Health Specialists and Nutrition Specialists with the ability to deploy rapidly and work in demanding environments for three to six months, to join the Standby Register.
Key Responsibilities – Public Health Specialists
Conduct a thorough assessment of the current health system of the country/region, focusing on its ability to respond and manage the crisis. From this they will be able to analyse gaps and suggest rapid corrective measures;
Collect, clean and transfer data from a Disease Early Warning Surveillance System or Early Warning and Response System;
Conduct community visits to monitor and support the implementation of public health activities (e.g. school health/hygiene education campaigns) and liaise regularly with the community through local health committees;
Act as focal point on outbreak detection and response activities, ensuring contingency plans and outbreak preparedness and response activities are in place and the relevant preparedness measures are taken. E.g. cholera outbreak and initiate the response activities;
Develop public health promotional materials for use in the community, and training material and content for public health promoters from the community and local partners.
Key Responsibilities – Nutrition Specialists
Conduct a thorough assessment of the current health system of the country/region, focusing on its ability to respond and manage the crisis. From this you will be able to analyse gaps and suggest rapid corrective measures;
Conduct community visits to map malnutrition sites, types and magnitude of needs of children and women (as a primary focus);
Develop an action plan and inventory of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food; e.g. Plumpy Nut needs by health district with a detailed supply schedule for nutrition therapeutic centres;
Develop and set up a data collection mechanism, meeting all nutritional data (who, how many, how severe, food/treatment required) needs for an emergency context;
Monitor the trends in the nutritional status of women and children and vulnerable populations and identify core advocacy concerns utilising Nutritional Surveillance Tools;
Qualifications, knowledge and experience required
Specialists wishing to apply for the Public Health profile and Nutrition Specialist profile will require 5 years experience fulfilling the above listed duties, preferably with 2 plus years experience in an emergency response setting. Given the requirements throughout Africa, French language skills are highly valued.
